Combining Geocaching and Meshtastic: A New Way to Discover and Connect

As an enthusiast of both geocaching and Meshtastic, I recently came up with an idea that merges these two hobbies into one unique adventure, introducing each community to something new along the way. It’s the perfect blend of tech and treasure hunting, with a twist: a LoRa-based Meshtastic node guiding adventurers directly to the geocache.

The Idea: Merging GPS and Mesh Networks

Geocaching is a treasure hunt that takes participants to precise GPS coordinates to find a hidden cache. Meshtastic, on the other hand, is a LoRa-based communication platform that lets users communicate across a mesh network without relying on cell towers or internet access. While most Meshtastic nodes also have GPS capabilities, the core of the network operates through LoRa. By merging these two interests, I created a unique experience that would require people to use both Meshtastic and geocaching skills to locate the hidden cache.

How It Works

For this experiment, I set up a Meshtastic node at the same GPS coordinates as the geocache location. To locate the cache, geocachers will need to connect to the mesh network with their own Meshtastic node. The name of my node matches the geocache ID — GCAYXHN — so that geocachers can quickly identify and connect to it.

Once connected, their Meshtastic device will guide them to the GPS coordinates of the cache by being part of the mesh, adding a layer of digital engagement to the traditional physical search.

Why Combine These Hobbies?

This setup offers a novel experience for both geocachers and Meshtastic users:

  1. For Geocachers: This adds an extra challenge beyond finding the cache itself. To participate, they’ll need to become familiar with Meshtastic, building a new skill and potentially opening the door to the world of mesh networks.
  2. For Meshtastic Users: They get to experience the thrill of geocaching, which can be a gateway into the world of adventure and exploration that geocaching provides. Using Meshtastic’s GPS features in a fun, real-world application brings new life to the hobby, connecting users with like-minded explorers.

Setting Up the Node and Cache

Setting up the Meshtastic node required careful planning. The node is configured to broadcast GPS coordinates that align precisely with the geocache location. To access it, participants need their own Meshtastic device, configured to link up with the mesh. Upon connecting, they’ll be able to follow the GPS coordinates straight to the hidden cache.

To add authenticity, I ensured the node’s name matched the geocache ID: GCAYXHN. This makes it easy for adventurers to identify and connect to the right node without confusion.

An Invitation to a New Kind of Treasure Hunt

If you’re a geocacher looking to explore a fresh twist on the game, or a Meshtastic enthusiast curious to try your hand at geocaching, this hybrid experience is for you. By bridging these hobbies, I hope to introduce members of each community to something new, expanding their skills and sense of adventure.

So, if you’re up for a bit of digital-meets-physical exploration, grab your Meshtastic device, check out GCAYXHN, and join the hunt. Happy caching and happy meshing!
